Bill Gates ”William Henry Gates” is an American computer programmer & co-founder of Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software business, also he is one of the most influential and richest people on the planet.


Gates was born on Oct. 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, the son of William H. Gates Sr., an attorney, and Mary Maxwell a businesswoman and bank executive. He has two sisters Kristi and Libby. He had a very close relationship with his mother.

Bill wrote his first software program at 13 and in high school was part of a group, which also included childhood friend, Paul Allen, together they developed their first program, which automatically created a school timetable and was unique for that time.

Gates and Allen wanted to start their own company immediately, but Bill’s parents wanted him to finish high school and go on to college, hoping he eventually would become a lawyer.

He graduated from high school in 1973, and he was a National Merit Scholar and scored 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT.

Also enrolled at Harvard College later the same year. As a college student, he spent a lot of time on the computers though he was not much interested in studying other subjects. His friend Allen suggested that Bill drops out of college to start a business.

In 1975 Gates, then a sophomore at Harvard University in Boston joined his teammates Allen, They started by adapting BASIC, a popular programming language for large computers.

Bill Gates founded Microsoft in 1976 when he formed a contract with MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) to develop a basic operating system for their new microcomputers.

In the early days, Bill Gates would review every line of code. He was also involved in several aspects of Microsoft’s business such as packing and sending off orders.

Microsoft became famous for its computer operating systems and killer business deals.

In 1980, Gates and Allen licensed an operating system called MS-DOS to IBM, at the time the world’s largest computer maker, for its first microcomputer, the IBM PC.

They were smart enough to retain the right to license the operating system to other companies, which eventually made them a fortune.

Microsoft introduced Microsoft Office in 1989. The package integrated several applications like Microsoft Word and Excel into one system that was compatible with all Microsoft products. The success of MS Office gave Microsoft a virtual monopoly on operating systems for PCs.


Gates has been married to Melinda French, a young woman working at Microsoft, and they have three children.
